After they returned to the inn, Aramis went to his room to get some much needed sleep. Mel went to his own room, deeply troubled by the events of the day. Kneeling before the bed, he withdraw a medallion from under his shirt.

Holding it in his hands, he focused his mind and reached out through Edria’s connection. He waited only a moment before he heard the Prophet’s words in his mind.

Melchiades, he greeted, I trust all is well?

I wish it were so, Mel answered. We have crossed paths with a templar. He could have killed us both easily, but he spared Aramis. He may believe he killed me, but Edria’s blessed armor kept me safe. Aramis was able to retrieve the blood, but the Templar took it. According to people in the town we are in, he headed west. What is in the west that would send him that way?

There was a pause. There are rumors that Mordum has an outpost somewhere on the edge of Talvaard. None of our agents have been able to find the place if the rumor holds true. What of the prince’s progression? Has the mark begun to take over his mind?

Not that I have seen, Mel said. He appears to be holding it off. He is strong of mind. I don’t think the mark will take him easily. The faster we can retrieve the blood, the faster we can get him back to you. I do hope you can find a way to remove the mark. Have you found anything yet?

Melchiades, listen carefully to my instruction. Edria has abandoned the prince. He bears the mark of Mordum. Our goddess refuses to aid him in any way. Let him help you retrieve the blood and then wash your hands of the man. That is the will of Edria.

Mel was taken aback, so much so that he almost lost the connection. He shook his head in disbelief. What are you saying? Edria would never abandon someone in need. Are you sure you heard her correctly? Surely this is not the will of the goddess!

Calm yourself, the Prophet said, You allow your emotions to cloud your mind. One man is not worth the cost of the world. We do what is right and true for the sake of humanity. Perhaps I should have assigned another to watch over the prince. Your friendship with him is hindering your ability to obey Edria. Do as I have commanded and return to Kaldore in haste.

The connection severed. Mel opened his eyes and put the medallion back. He trusted the Prophet above any man, but this did not seem right. It twisted his gut and made him feel ill. He numbly climbed into the bed and lay on his back, staring up at the ceiling. He silently pleaded to Edria, asking her to help Aramis.

He eventually fell asleep, hoping Edria had heard his prayers.
